This is a VERY FINE to EXCELLENT condition example of the socket bayonet for the US M1860 Spencer Repeating Rifle (Reilly B109). As is typical of Spencer bayonets, it is completely unmarked, except for a small inspectors' mark. In this case it is a letter L just forward of the end of the mortise cut on the socket of the bayonet. Other inspector letters that are sometimes encountered is "M", which is fairly common and "H", which is only occasionally found. The only features that make it readily apparent that it is a Spencer bayonet is the socket, which has a nominal .812" bore diameter (a standard M1855 bayonet has a .783" bore diameter), and the higher than normal bridge at the rear of the socket, which is necessary to clear the Spencer rifle front sight. In all other ways, the bayonet has the appearance of the standard Type I M1855 .58 caliber socket bayonet. The bayonet is full-length and retains its original locking ring and tension screw. The locking ring functions smoothly and correctly. The bayonet retains most of its original arsenal bright polish, with some minor dulling. It also shows scattered freckled surface frosting and some very minor discoloration over the entire blade and the socket, giving the face of the blade a somewhat frosted and mottled appearance. A little 0000 steel wool and some light oil might remove some of this discoloration and improve its overall appearance somewhat. The bayonet shows mostly smooth metal throughout with no pitting and remains extremely crisp. There are a few flecks of pinpricking present on the blade, but nothing significant or notable. There are also a couple of minor nicks and dings along the edges of the blade. The socket shows some scattered minor scratches, mars and dings as well, and some of these marks appear on the neck of the bayonet also. These minor impact marks are typical and regularly appear on socket bayonets that saw actual use in the field. If you have a nice condition US M1860 Spencer Rifle, this bayonet would be a very good compliment to it. This is a really a fantastic example of a fairly scarce Civil War socket bayonet in wonderful condition, with a nice, legible inspection mark on the socket. This would be a great addition to the display of a very high condition Spencer Rifle.
