This is a FINE condition example of a Medium Sized Bag Shaped Pistol Flask by James Dixon & Sons of Sheffield, England. Dixon was a major maker of flasks and accouterments during the mid-19thcentury and the flasks, oilers and other gun accessories made by the firm are  ubiquitous  in cased English firearms sets. This  mid-sized flask would be appropriate for a smaller caliber cased pistol or pocket revolver. The flask body measures 3 ½” long and just over 1 3/8” in width as the widest point. The flask is topped  by a removable charge cap and adjustable measure, which measures 1 3/16” in length. The overall length of the flask with the cap and charger is 4 ½”. A small, .4” diameter lanyard ring is present in th base of the flask with a .2” inner diameter. The top of the charger cap is  marked in two lines:

DIXON& SONS

SHEFFIELD

The adjustable charger offers four different powder charge amounts, ranging from 4/83/8 and 2/8-dram increments and is clearly marked DRAM on the spout.

The flask is in FINE condition and  remains solid and complete. The copper body has  a medium copper patina with some of the original varnish present and the brass lid retains much of gold gilt finish. The body of the flask shows  only a couple of minor pushes and shallow dents. The most noticeable is on that is about the size of a fingertip. The seams remain solid and complete and all three original screws are in place in the threaded brass collar that tops the flask body. The charger moves freely, adjusting easily to all three positions and the charging mechanism functions smoothly as well. Even the original charger spring is in place and retains some nice original fire blue.

Overall this is a really nice example of a Medium Pistol Sized Dixon & Sons Bag Flask that would be a fine addition to any small caliber pistol or pocket percussion revolver, particularly. I’ve seen these flasks priced up into the mid-$400 to mid-$500 range, often in lesser condition. This is a really nice flask that is fairly priced and will be a nice accessory to go with  your appropriate English pocket pistol or revolver.
