This is a VERY GOOD+ to NEAR FINE condition example of the socket bayonet for the US M1860 Spencer Repeating Rifle (Reilly B109). As is typical of Spencer bayonets, it is completely unmarked, except for a small inspectors’ mark. In this case it is a letter M just forward of the end of the mortise cut on the socket of the bayonet. Other inspector letters that are sometimes encountered is “L”, which is fairly common and “H”, which is only occasionally found. The only features that make it readily apparent that it is a Spencer bayonet is the socket, which has a nominal .812” bore diameter (a standard M1855 bayonet has a .783” bore diameter), and the higher than normal bridge at the rear of the socket, which is necessary to clear the Spencer rifle front sight. In all other ways, the bayonet has the appearance of the standard Type I M1855 .58 caliber socket bayonet. The bayonet is full-length and retains its original locking ring and tension screw. The locking ring functions smoothly and correctly. The bayonet appears to retain much of its original arsenal bright polish on the blade, with some dulling. It also shows scattered freckles of minor surface oxidation and discoloration over the entire blade. The bayonet blade is almost entirely smooth metal throughout with no real pitting and remains quite crisp. There are also a couple of minor nicks and dings along the edges of the blade. The socket shows a darker, oxidized patina and shows evenly distributed moderate pinpricking and some very light pitting, along with some scattered minor scratches, mars and dings as well. There are also some minor impact marks on the neck of the bayonet. These minor impact marks are typical and regularly appear on socket bayonets that saw actual use in the field. If you have a nice condition US M1860 Spencer Rifle, this bayonet would be a very good compliment to it. This is a really nice example of a fairly scarce Civil War socket bayonet in very nice condition, with a nice, legible inspection mark on the socket and at a reasonable price for a Spencer Rifle Socket Bayonet.
