This is a VERY GOOD condition example of the long bladed Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Bayonet for the Russian Contract Model 1895 Winchester Lever Action Musket. In 1914, due to the need to arm a huge army that had been mobilized for service in the Great War, the Russians contracted with Winchester to produce 300,000 Model 1895 Winchester Muskets chambered for the standard Russian 7.62x54R rifle cartridge. In addition, the Russians ordered 300,000 bayonets to go with the rifles. In the end, Winchester would deliver about 294,000 rifles and bayonets, before the Russians withdrew from World War I after the Bolshevik Revolution in 1917. The Russians designated both items with the model year of 1915. The standard version of the Winchester 1895 bayonet was nominally 12 ¾” in overall length with an 8 ¼” blade. The Russian contract version had an overall length of nominally of 20 11/32” with a nominally 15 13/16” blade. It was a traditional knife bayonet with a single edge and a spear point blade. The scabbard was of blued steel with a riveted leather belt loop similar to that used on the Winchester Model 1895 Lee Navy Rifle bayonet.

As noted, this example of the Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Bayonet remains in about VERY GOOD condition. The bayonet has a 15.825” single edged spear point blade with a 10 ¾” median fuller. The bayonet’s overall length is 20.125” and the 4.5” hilt has riveted smooth walnut grip scales. The face of the 2 ¾” long steel cross guard is marked:

WINCHESTER REPEATING ARMS CO.

The muzzle ring of the bayonet measures .63” (16mm) the mortise cut dimension are for the Russian contract Winchester Model 1895 Musket, rather than other variants of the 1895 Musket. The bayonet has a mostly smooth blade with a dull pewter patina and scattered freckles of surface oxidation and discoloration. There is also some discoloration from old, dried oil or grease on the bayonet, which has a brownish color to it. The markings on the face of the guard remain clear and the locking latch mechanism remains fully functional. The grip panels show scattered bumps, dings and mars from handling and use. The bayonet is accompanied by its blued steel scabbard with riveted leather belt loop. The scabbard retains much of its blued finish, showing moderate amounts of thinning and loss, particularly along the high edges and contact points. The scabbard has some scattered patches of surface oxidation and light surface roughness. The leather belt loop is securely fastened and shows some moderate wear, some crazing and some flaked finish loss.

Overall, this is a very nice example of a long blade Russian Contract Winchester Model 1895 Musket Bayonet and Scabbard. It would be a nice addition to your WWI Russian Model 1895 (Model 1915) Rifle or to a collection of Winchester bayonets, World War I bayonets or simply Russian military edged weapons. These bayonets are not common on the market, and this is a nice example with a nice scabbard.
