This is a lovely ninth plate ambrotype of an enlisted Union soldier who is proudly displaying his medium sized pepperbox revolver. The soldier is wearing a standard Pattern 1858 Dress Coat, better known simply as an Enlisted Frock Coat. The coat shows the typical standing collar with sky blue piping and nine button front closures. The buttons in the image have been gilded and man’s cheeks have been lightly tinted. The solider has a haunting look on his face, as if he is staring through the camera, almost a “thousand-yard stare.” One has to wonder if this unidentified young man had some sort of premonition about his impending doom.

The image is about VERY GOOD+ condition. It is extremely clear but does show some light scuffing, minor surface scratching and some finish and minor image loss. The scattered emulsified spots do appear on the subject’s face in a couple of locations, but do not seriously detract from the clarity or content of the image. A number of photographs of the image were taken in attempt to accurately represent its appearance “in person”. A high-resolution scan of the image was taken with the image removed from the frame, matte and boarder, allowing the portions of the image that are covered by the matte to be visible. This image has only been very slightly processed, in an attempt to make the scan look as much like the image does when it is in your hand. The closeups that are shown are crops from this high-resolution scan. The last two “pictures” of the image that are shown have been manipulated to make them slightly lighter and to allow the details of the image to be more readily apparent. These two pictures are not accurate depictions of the brightness of the image and are only provided to show detail. The last of these shows the image “reversed” so that real appearance and right to left orientation of the negative image are restored. The image has a gold foil matte, surround and glass protective cover. The ninth plate image is housed in a lovely floral patten Littlefield, Parson & Company Daguerreotype Case, with their label inside, under the image. The case remains in FINE condition with no real damage and only the lightest wear on the exterior. The maroon embossed pillow opposite the image shows some wear and fading but is intact and looks very good. The hinges, catch and latch are all intact, original and function correctly.

Overall, this is a really lovely clear image with some uncommon content. The presence of an Allen style pepperbox in the image is not common and would a wonderful image to display along with a collection of pepperbox revolvers.
