This is a relatively scarce example of the kinds of combination barrel wrench and bullet mold tools that saw use with a variety of mid-18th century through mid-19th century pocket pistols that had twist off barrels for loading. The tool consists of an octagonal barrel wrench and a dual cavity round ball mold. The mold cavities are nominally .30 caliber. The measurement across opposite flats for the barrel wrench is .63” and was intended to mate with the octagonal barrel section of a twist off pistol’s barrel to assist with the removal of the barrel. The mold measures 3.5” in overall length with a mold block that measures about 1.4” in length and about .43” tall and wide. The tool is unmarked. The tool is in VERY GOOD condition and has a thickly oxidized brown patina, both inside and outside. The metal shows numerous scattered dings and dents from handling and use. The mold cavities show moderate oxidation and some rust, which could probably be cleaned. This would be a nice addition to any twist off pistol display for a gun that is nominally 5/8” across the flats and has a nominally .30 caliber bore. Whether it is an English or European twist off flintlock pocket pistol or a single shot twist off percussion pistol from Allen & Thurber, Bacon or any other host of inexpensive gun makers of the 19th century, it would be a nice piece to have to display and use with the gun.
