Offered here is a VERY GOOD condition example of the dual cavity brass bullet mold that the Massachusetts Arms Company delivered with their .31 caliber Adams Patent Pocket Revolvers. Between 1857 and 1861 the Massachusetts Arms Company produced some 4,500 .31 caliber Adams Model 1854 double action percussion pocket revolvers produced under license from Robert Adams. Production was halted by a fire at the Mass Arms Company, and when the factory was finally up and running again a couple of years later, Edward Maynard concentrated on producing 2nd Model Maynard Carbines for the US Ordnance Department and never returned to producing percussion pocket revolvers.
The brass mold is 4.65” in overall length with a mold block that is 1.70” long, .6” wide and .57” tall. The tapered straight brass arms are 3.75” long. The mold has two cavities and casts both a round ball and a conical ball, with nominal maximum diameters of .32” and .3125”, respectively. The mold has a pivoting blued steel sprue cutter. The end of the right arm is deeply stamped in two lines:
MASS. ARMS CO.
CHIOPEE FALLS
As noted, the mold is in VERY GOOD condition with a nice, uncleaned dark brass patina with some staining and age discoloration. The marking on the arm is mostly clear and sharp, although a small ding is present over the “C” and “H” at the beginning of “CHICOPEE”. The mold has crisp, bright cavities with no obvious damage that would affect the casting of bullets. The sprue cutter retains about 70%+ of its dulling and fading blued finish with moderate amounts of scattered surface oxidation and minor surface roughness. The mold opens and closes smoothly and aligns as it should, with the tapered locating pin intact. The sprue cutter moves smoothly as well. As would be expected, the mold shows some scattered bump and dings from handling and use.
Overall, this is a nice solid example of a Mass Arms marked mold for their Adams Patent Pocket Revolvers. This would be a nice accessory to display with your Mass Arms Pocket Revolver or to add to a cased set with one of those guns.
