This is a FINE condition example of the US replacement socket bayonet for the percussion converted US Model 1816/22/28 muskets. These bayonets were produced after 1855, to replace original Model 1816/22/27 bayonets that had been lost or damaged over the years. They are primarily associated with the Remington-Maynard and Hewes & Phillips (H&P) conversion muskets however they are correct for any percussion alteration of a US Model1816/22/28 musket that saw use after 1855. The bayonet features the typical 1816/22/27 style friction fit socket with a T-shaped mortise and no locking ring. However, the bayonet has the US Model 1855 style 18” blade with tapered shoulders and a full-length face flute, rather than the 16” blade with scalloped shoulders that was used on the guns originally during the flintlock period.
As noted, this particular example is in about FINE condition. The bayonet has a full-length 18” blade, and the usual nearly full-length face flute. The blade retains much of its arsenal bright polish although there is lightly scattered oxidized freckling on the blade and some small, scattered spots of age discoloration as well. Most of this could probably be carefully cleaned if so desired, bringing the bayonet closer to its “as new” original National Armory Bright appearance. The blade is mostly smooth and free of any pitting. There are some minor scattered freckles of light surface roughness here and there, as well as scattered dings, dents and scuffs. Impact marks are quite common on bayonets that saw any use, as the bayonet was not only used in drill but was the method by which arms were stacked, interlocking three bayonets to make the stack. There are slightly more impact marks on the socket than the blade, and some dents along the rear edge of the socket. However, these do not appear to affect the ability of the bayonet to be fixed to a musket. The U.S mark on the blade face is very crisp and clear and is deeply struck. The bayonet is in really very nice condition and displays very well. If you need a very crisp, fine condition socket bayonet for display with your fine condition US M1816/22/28 percussion conversion musket, this one would be a perfect one to add to it. This is really nice socket bayonet that would look great with any high condition musket.
